The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) released its Cancer Progress Report 2026 on 16 September 2026. It says the overall US cancer death rate fell 35% between 1991 and 2024, meaning more than 4.8 million cancer deaths were averted.
These figures describe the United States. They do not describe cancer outcomes in India.
The Key Facts
Table of Contents
Toggle- AACR credits lower smoking rates and advances in prevention, early detection, and treatment
- Five-year survival for all cancers combined rose from 49% (diagnosed in the mid-1970s) to 71% (diagnosed 2016–2022)
- For cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body, five-year survival rose from 17% to 36%
- About 18.6 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive at the start of 2025
New Treatments Approved
Between July 2025 and June 2026, the US FDA approved 11 new anticancer therapies, plus new uses for five existing ones. The report highlights several “firsts”:
- The first PROTAC drug for breast cancer. A PROTAC helps the cell’s own disposal system break down a cancer-driving protein
- The first immune checkpoint inhibitor for ovarian cancer
- The first targeted therapy for diffuse midline glioma, a rare and aggressive brain tumour
- The first therapy to delay progression in high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma
Where Progress Is Uneven
- The report estimates over 2.1 million new US cancer cases and about 626,000 deaths in 2026
- Five-year survival is still very low for some cancers: 13.7% for pancreatic cancer and 6.6% for glioblastoma, compared with 91.9% for female breast cancer and 98.2% for prostate cancer
- Cancer in adults aged 18–49 is the only age group with a sustained rise in new cases from 1995 to 2021
- Rural residents had cancer death rates about 18% higher than urban residents in 2020–2024
- Some racial and ethnic groups still face the highest death rates
What Patients Should Know
- A falling death rate does not mean fewer diagnoses. New cases are expected to keep rising as populations age
- New drugs are often approved first in the US. Whether a drug is approved, available, and affordable in India needs to be checked with your treating team
- Progress depends on cancer type. Ask your oncologist what the latest evidence says for your diagnosis
